Please look through the following tips and notes before contacting Technical Support. Program will not install or stops working ----------------------------------------- To ensure that the program installs and runs correctly, make certain the CD is free of all foreign particles. Even if the disc is not visibly dirty, it is helpful to wash it. To properly clean a disc: 1. Run it under warm tap water. 2. Use a mild dish soap and a soft cloth to cleanse, wiping across the CD rather than in a circular motion. 3. Rinse well. 4. Dry completely with a clean cloth. 5. Exit out of all active programs and shut down all TSR programs before reinstalling. DeskJet or Inkjet Printing Tips ------------------------------- For Windows 95 , please should acquire the latest driver from the printer manufacturer. We recommend using the default driver settings, and printing in Econo-mode to conserve ink. Note: For Canon BJC printers in Windows 95, go to the Graphics Tab, click Custom, and select Diffusion. Laser Printing Tips ------------------- If there are problems printing to a laser printer with any of the following error messages: "error 21" message, "print overrun" message, or if there is only partial map printing, verify that the printer settings match the printer memory. To print at 300 dpi requires 1.5 MB or more of printer RAM, and to print at 600 dpi, requires 6 MB or more of printer RAM. Before printing, choose File...Print Setup from the Street Atlas USA 5.0 menu bar and select Properties. Set the Graphics Mode to Raster (if available) and enable Print True Type as Graphics option under Fonts. Dot Matrix Printing Tips ------------------------ If there are problems printing to a Panasonic 1164 or 1124 printer, set the dithering to fine. To ensure the highest quality printing, set the resolution to 360x360. Video color display tips ------------------------ If the display is configured for 256 colors, when you switch to another program that uses its own color palette, the desktop wallpaper may flash, and then may be repainted using the colors from the new program's palette. This may cause the desktop or toolbar colors to look strange. Because of this, the map colors may also flash when switching between another application and Street Atlas USA 5.0. In addition, you may also experience problems with the highlight option of some draw features. To resolve this problem, increase the number of colors Windows displays. Switch to High or True Color using the Display icon in the Control Panel. Downloading On-Line Information ------------------------------ The first time you download information from the DeLorme Web Site, you will be asked to register Street Atlas USA 5.0. After registering the software, you will be able to download information from our databases free of charge. Note: We NEVER sell the names and addresses of those who register with us to any other company. Status Bar Lat/Lon Position Formats ----------------------------------- Street Atlas USA 5.0 is capable of displaying the status bar latitude and longitude in a variety of different formats. To change the format you must be familiar with editing application ini files. Change the latlon= key in the [main] section of the sa5.ini file, located in the windows directory, to one of the following formats: N1111 N1111.1111 N11.1111 N11 N11 11 N11 11 11 N11 N11 11 11.11 Example: [main] latlon=N11 11 11.11 Type spaces where you expect degree or minute symbols in the status bar display. The N directional indicator can be placed at the beginning or end of the format string. If you omit the directional indicator, the default is plus/minus. To return to the default status bar display you can delete the latlon= key. If you do not find the lanlon= key in the [main] section, you can add it. Adjusting for Magnetic Declination ---------------------------------- Users can have Street Atlas USA 5.0 adjust the bearing between way-points for magnetic declination (sometimes called magnetic deviation or variation). To set this you must be familiar with editing application ini files. Change the north= key in the [gps] section of the sa5.ini file, located in the windows directory, to the desired declination. Example: [gps] north=12 alreadycompass=0 This will also adjust the bearing sent by the GPS unless you set the alreadycompass= key in the [gps] section equal to 1. Setting this alreadycompass= key equal to 1 indicates to the application that the GPS has already corrected for declination. Set this value equal to 1 if you have set the GPS to correct for declination. If you do not find the north= or alreadycompass keys in the [gps] section, you can add them. Adjusting the GPS Update Rate ----------------------------- Users can adjust the rate at which the GPS will update. To set this you must be familiar with editing application ini files. Change the updaterate= key in the [gps] section of the sa5.ini file, located in the windows directory, to the desired rate (in seconds). Example: [gps] updaterate = 5 For GPS Receivers that do not output Checksums ---------------------------------------------- Users can set an INI key in the DeLGPS.ini file if their GPS unit does not support appending a checksum to the output character string. Adding this to the DeLGPS.ini file will cause the checksum to be ignored. [Init] ignorechecksum=1 Note: The receiver must still output a NEMA 0183 character string. Palm Pilot Operations --------------------- If you have HotSync loaded in the startup (the default configuration) it will reserve the COM port. If that is the one where the GPS is plugged in, you will need to exit HotSync to get the GPS to initialize. This can be done by clicking on the HotSync icon in the Task Bar, and choose the Exit option from the resulting pop up menu. Reading the Runtime CD after Setup ---------------------------------- If the Street Atlas USA 5.0 Runtime CD is at a different location than the Setup CD, it will be necessary run OSMOSIS.EXE which is placed in the UTILS subdirectory of the ATLAS5 directory. Use this application to point Street Atlas USA 5.0 to the correct location of the Runtime CD. Trouble Shooting installation problems -------------------------------------- If you are receiving errors during the installation, please make sure that all background applications are shut down before running the installation for Street Atlas USA 5.0. Programs that cause the greatest concern are Anti-Virus, Uninstaller, and Mail Services. Installing from one CD Drive and running from another ----------------------------------------------------- If you install Street Atlas USA 5.0 from one CD-ROM Drive, and wish to run it from another, run the Osmosis program from the UTILS subdirectory of the C:\ATLAS5 directory (where C:\ATLAS5 is the directory where Street Atlas USA 5.0 is installed). In this program you can assign a new path by typing in the drive letter. Note: In order to run this software over a network, it is necessary to purchase a network license agreement. Please consult the license or contact customer service for further information. Uninstall Procedure ------------------- Double-click the "Street Atlas USA 5.0" entry in the Add/Remove Programs list to remove the Street Atlas USA 5.0 files from the PC. However, if you use the On-Line feature in Street Atlas USA 5.0, several *.htm files may remain in the CACHE directory. To ensure that these files are removed, use the Cache Manager program and Purge All Records before uninstalling. If users add files or icons of their own, the Uninstall will not remove them. For your reference, here is a brief list of what the Street Atlas USA 5.0 Setup program installs: 1. Creates an atlas5 directory and copies program files into it. 2. Creates a DeLorme group (or folder for Windows 95) and creates icons. 3. Creates a SA5.INI file in the Windows directory. 4. Copies the Uninstall executable file UNINST.EXE into the Windows directory. 5. Updates shared files in the Windows\System directory. We highly recommend that you do not remove these files because they may be used by many other popular programs. The uninstall icon will remove these files if it is determined that no other program are sharing them. Remote Install Instructions --------------------------- We recommend you install Street Atlas USA 5.0 to a computer with direct access to a CD-ROM drive following the installation instructions in the Users Guide. It is possible, however, to install the program to a computer without direct access to a CD-ROM drive. Requirements for Remote Install: 1. At least one computer with access to a CD-ROM drive. 2. Instructions for Moving Extracted data to a Remote Computer: The DeLorme Extractor application will copy the extracted data to the \mapdata subdirectory of the directory where Street Atlas USA 5.0 is installed. In order to use this data on a remote computer, you need to copy it manually. The Extractor application will indicate where the data files have been copied. Copy all files from the directory specified by Extractor to the C:\ATLAS5\MAPDATA directory on the remote computer, where C:\ATLAS5 is the Street Atlas USA 5.0 install directory on the remote computer. The remote installation of Street Atlas USA 5.0 should now be ready to run with extracted data. Also, if you used Extractor to copy the locators and want to use them on the remote computer, copy all the files and subdirectories from the C:\ATLAS5\ZIP directory to the C:\ATLAS5\ZIP directory on the remote computer, where C:\ATLAS5 is the Street Atlas USA 5.0 install directory. Connecting two computers with Direct Cable Connection ---------------------------------------------------- With Direct Cable Connection, you can establish a direct serial or parallel cable connection between two computers both running Windows 95, in order to share the resources of the computer designated as the host. For example, with Direct Cable Connection, one computer can share the CD-ROM drive of another. For more information on connecting two computers using Direct Cable Connection, consult the Windows 95 help files or the Windows 95 Resource Kit.
