| Assignment #3 For each of the numberical models assigned, the Team will: 1. Identify the basic underlying assumptions used in developing and operating the model to produce its forecasts. 2. Identify the Biases associated with each model in it's operational mode. 3. Identify how these assumptions and biases could affect the use of the model output in the Earth's tropical regions 4. Based upon the above information, provide an assessment of the essential utility, potential accuracy, and possible shortfalls of the model output when applied to tropical regions. Each Team will prepare a written report of the above information (with sufficient copies for each member of the class) and present the results of your investigation to the class in a 5 - 10 minute oral report. All members of the Team will receive the same grade on the project so it is up to each Team to allocate responsibilities to each member accordingly. The Models and responsible Teams are assigned as follows: Team 1 --- ETA Team 2 --- NGM Team 3 --- AVN Team 4 --- ECMWF and UKMET Team 5 --- MRF The MM5 and NOGAPS models are not included as it is doubtful that there is sufficient open literature documenting their biases as required for this project. If anyone knows of such information, Please let me know where it may be found. Due Date: 2 May 2000 |
