Batwing was a feature discovered after GOES 8 went on orbit. It is caused by stray Sun light getting into the Earth Sensor. The error introduced into the attitude control system resembles the BATWING symbol used in the movie. Satellite Motion Compensation (SMC) loads are uplinked into the IMC (Image Motion Compensation) logic that counteracts the pointing errors by deflecting the Imager Scan line in an opposite direction of equal proportion to the error. Batwing occurs around the solstices when the Sun declination is greater than 16.4 degrees + and -.
